Anders Zorn is one of Sweden's best-known artists, universally admired for his famous nude paintings and Genre art. He was born Anders Leonard Zorn in Mora, Sweden, in 1860 and died in 1920 aged 60 and a student at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts for three years until 1800. He is sometimes referred to as the Swedish Impressionist. Zorn came from a poor rural background but married into a wealthy Jewish family.
Paintings by Anders Zorn achieved international acclaim with his famous portrait paintings of President Grove Cleveland and President William Howard Taft. His highly skilled oil paintings attracted Swedish high society members who commissioned portraits of them and their families. International success followed, and he is one of the most admired painters of the period. The success of his oil painting portraits brought him recognition during his lifetime.
Zorn and his wife built an extensive art collection they gifted to the Swedish State upon their demise. The Zorn Collection is available at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Stockholm. The home Zorn and his wife Emma shared is now The Zorn Museum. The Museum displays the most extensive collection of his oil paintings and includes other personal items owned by the couple. Midnight 1891 is just one of the artist's famous paintings at the Museum. Zorn's Sunday Morning 1891 painting achieved a record price of US$3.9 when sold in 2021.
