Richard Diebenkorn was an American abstract expressionist painter working in the Bay Area of San Francisco. He achieved worldwide fame with his extensive series of Ocean Park paintings. He was taught as a student at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and was influenced by Clyfford Still and Willem de Kooning. The Ocean Park series were heavily influenced by several Matisse paintings seen by Diebenkorn in a 1966 exhibition in Los Angeles. He started painting the Ocean Park series in 1967 in Santa Monica and continued to paint some 135 canvases over the next 18 years. His paintings are widely held throughout the USA and worldwide.
